Villa imagination

Mission and vision

You enter an old charming mansion full of words and images. Everyone is welcome to enjoy the imagination of writers and illustrators, to dwell in the worlds that are imagined. You are invited to read, think and look beyond the everyday. In short: it is a house that stimulates the imagination.

Villa Imagination  wants to be a unique place in Flanders where young and old experience quality exhibitions and participate in activities around books and illustration.

By working around books and illustration, Villa Imagination  opens up other worlds for visitors of all ages. They playfully come into contact with other cultures and socially relevant themes. Through a tailor-made educational program they strengthen their literary reading skills and visual literacy. They explore their own creativity. Villa Imagination  aims for a sustainable effect: the visitor is enriched and inspired. For young children, Villa Imagination wants to lay the foundation for lifelong book love.

With a leading and innovative offer, Villa Imagination wants to bring together as many people as possible in their love for books and illustration. Authors and illustrators get the chance to show their work, interact with each other and with their readers. Villa Imagination aims at a broad audience according to age, literacy, geographical spread, origin and background, from individual visitors over families to (school) groups.

In the diverse society Villa Imagination is a house where everyone can feel at home because of the hospitable atmosphere and the wide range on offer. Special attention is paid to vulnerable groups and to education. They work together with partners from the education and welfare sector, with libraries and with the youth and culture sector to provide guidance, collaborate on content, and share expertise and networks.

By collaborating with carefully selected partners, Villa Imagination wants to spread book love outside the walls.

My experience when I visited the museum

When entering the house it gave me immediately welcome and warm feeling. Every room was a new wonder to experience. In the middle of one room was a white gazebo filled with pillows where you can sit together to read and listen to stories. I loved the permanent room with the table made in papier-mâché that was placed on the ceiling. There were different fairy-tail scenes made out of papier-mâché. I see myself using this in my classroom with the children working around a topic. Places to sit and enjoy doing workshops. There were walls with holes to look through and discover new things. It gives you the feeling like being “Alice in Wonderland”. On the walls were different artworks displayed that were created as prints in the books.

There are several suitcases filled with tasks related to the books displayed. Another lovely idea was the sandbox where there were different cardboard figures and words hidden in the sand. Here the children could play and make their own story. This idea I used already in a former trainee-ship when we were working around nature and the kids loved it. Furthermore there are different temporary exposition, you can look up on their website "Villa Imagination" . A lovely place to connect and learn about the books.
